Kyoto, Japan’s former Imperial capital, is also known as the thousand-year capital and is a symbol for old Japan. Rich on cultural heritage and tradition, this 1,500,000 people city is defined by its temples, gardens and shrines. It is Japan’s most cycling-friendly city and is surrounded by forests and mountains. During World War II, Kyoto was dropped from the list of target cities, due to its valuable historical sites and architecture. The city is full of good venues to eat and traditional markets.
