Braunschweig is a city of 23,000 in Lower Saxony. It is located north of the Hartz mountains. A powerful centre of commerce in medieval Germany, Braunschweig today is major centre of scientific research and development. It is still famous as the city of Henry the Lion, who made it his capital. Though 90% of Braunschweig’s building were destroyed during bombings in WWII, its town centre has now been carefully reconstructed. Its museums and impressive buildings are now major tourist attractions.
