How to apply

Applications must be submitted through the University of Glasgow online application system, for inclusion in the next Cohort. The programme will begin the week of Monday 13th September 2021.

Application deadline: 31 July 2021

Please note: This is the fourth and final recruitment round for Cohort 2021. Fully-funded studentships are now only available for "Home" students. International Candidates may still apply if they have a funding source independent of FUSE CDT. There will be a very small number of fully-funded international studentships available in the 2022 intake.

We are conscious the current quarantine situation may impact applicants' ability to quickly source supporting documentation. We would ask applicants to submit their online application as soon as the following essential paperwork is ready, in order for us to shortlist candidates for interview:

  • a cover letter (include evidence of your interest in ultrasonics and your future aspirations)
  • a CV (please ensure to include details of activities - work, study, etc. - over the last three years)
  • evidence of grades (official transcript preferred)
  • certificates of completed qualifications
  • two references (at least one reference should be submitted before interview)
  • complete the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion survey

Required documents can be uploaded via the Applicant Self Service area after your initial application is submitted.

Online Application Form

Please note that unlike a standard PhD application, FUSE CDT applicants do not have to choose and contact a supervisor before submitting your application. Instead, applicants apply for 'open entry' and research projects are aligned with students after their first year of study with us.

In the online application, for 'open entry' please write "Prof Sandy Cochran" (co-director of FUSE) as your default supervisor, and write "FUSE CDT" for the thesis title and description.

For the first time this year, we are offering a select number of projects for up-front alignment. Please see Projects Available to make an application to a specific research project.

Projects Available

This year, we have an EngD in Multi-mode Piezoelectric Composite for Next Generation SONAR available for September 2021 start. Please read the full job description here. For those applying for this EngD, please write "Dr Richard O'Leary" as your supervisor in the application form, and copy and paste the EngD title and project description into the thesis title and description.

We have recently started advertising a PhD in Automated Inspection of Challenging Components using Novel Kelpie Designs that is also available for September 2021 start. You can read the full job description here. As above, when applying for this specific project, please cite "Prof Anthony Gachagan" as your supervisor in the application form, and copy and paste the PhD title and project description into the thesis title and description.

Interviews

Under normal circumstances, all shortlisted candidates are invited to attend a FUSE Interview Day to meet staff, students and to view the facilities available to all FUSE researchers at the University of Strathclyde and the University of Glasgow.

Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, interviews are taking place remotely for the foreseeable future via video-call or phone-call.

If COVID-19 restrictions are still expected to be in place, FUSE will host virtual opportunities for prospective candidates and offer-holders to talk with fellow incoming cohort members, current FUSE students and staff.

Fully funded studentships are available at the UK home rate and international rate:
