Policy and Practice Recommendations for Augmented and Mixed Reality

Who are we?

We are the team behind the project 'Augmented Reality: Ethics, Perception, Metaphysics', funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh and based at the University of Glasgow's Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience

What are we doing?

'Augmented Reality: Ethics, Perception, Metaphysics' ran from November 2021 to November 2023, with a series of 13 online workshops and a final in-person conference. It brought together an international network of specialists in philosophy, technology, psychology, law and ethics to investigate the profound implications of augmented reality technology, from privacy, data protection and identity, to autonomy and well-being.

The Policy Report

This page hosts our report Policy and Practice Recommendations for Augmented and Mixed Reality. It identifies ethical opportunities and risks presented by augmented reality. Our central finding is that the nature, pace and drivers of technological development mean that we cannot rely on either market forces or natural evolution to maximise opportunities and minimize risks. Active intervention is needed to shape a positive technological trajectory. Our retailed recommendations include lessons for developers, industry and policymakers, as well as priorities for further research.
